Dinner Report 18th October 2002

The faint smell of mothballs; an assortment of ill-fitting dinner jackets of indeterminate vintage; sounds of greetings and the comparison of waist-lines; what else could it be but the Annual Dinner. A goodly turnout of 48 gathered last October for the customary ceremonies. After a poor meal, indifferently served (!), Terry Lee (1952) invoked thoughts of School. The President, Len Dyer, responded, shepherded along by MC Tony Bowrey (both '49). The Headmaster made the most of his 5 minutes and Tony read messages from a number unable to be present. Graham Knight (1967) excelled himself by bringing 11 of his year together with a larger target for 2003. But, as always, the chance to reminisce and catch up on events was the main reason for being there. A special guest in the shape of 'Big Ted' collected £77.50 for the RUH Big Ted's Day Out Appeal. We shall be looking for a new venue for 2003! Tony Bowrey was last seen heading for the local Burgerking!!!

Ladies Night 22nd November 2002

A great success as usual. An excellent meal, cheerfully and skilfully served up by Pete, Mitch and their crew at the Golf Club. Modesty forbids comment on the 'entertainment'; suffice it to say that the audience were in good voice, and the discovery of the 'Patchway Autoparts Staff Song' , seemed to catch the President by surprise!

Sadly, I have to report the death of John Ruddick, on January 1st. John left School in 1928 and was probably our oldest member. He was President in 1952 and 1972, and a long time President of the Bath Cricket Club. A service was held in Bath Abbey and a number of members were present. New Years day saw an e-mailed photo arrive from Don Duck,(1949) now in New Zealand, showing 2 skimpily clad, tanned bodies, reputedly enjoying dinner at 20.30 (half past eight in the evening!) on New Years Eve, with the sun still shining and a sky of blue! How can people do that to their friends? Fred Ward (1950) has had a bit of a rough time since finding us early last year, resulting in a pretty major operation. We wish him a speedy recovery. Colin Darracott (1967) was relieved of a pound for membership by the Secretary, whilst accompanying the Mayor after the School Carol Service. Another candidate for the Knight charm?

The Rugby Club have not had the best of seasons but struggle valiantly on. Two results of note, they managed to beat Combe Down and OE's. 'Nuff said! The Association Golf Day has been fixed for 'D Day', the 6th June. Usual format. Mike Wood is in the driving seat again and when you've put the date in your diary, let Systemagic (01225 426800) know that you are coming. More details next time. Don't forget, if you are 'on-line' e-mails save us money, and any news is always welcome.
