The social events, like the summer, seem to have passed so quickly. The Association won the annual golf match against NHSOB. Our own golf day at Sham Castle, this year organised by Mike Wood, saw both morning and afternoon sessions well contested. The honours went to Steve Ford (Medal), Ollie Dicks from the Rugby Club (Stableford) and Mick Moore with the 'Old Tosser's Tankard'.
The Rugby Club also won the cup at the Approach Golf with Paul Rich. Barry Marsh, Neil Blake and Rich Wood took the next 3 places. Incidentally, next year will be the 50th anniversary of the Approach Golf contest, played for the 'John Midgely' Trophy, now installed in a fine case courtesy of Neil Blake, and this years contestants thought it a good idea for all those previous winners who are still active to aim to be there in 2003. So keep the first week in July off your holiday lists!
Sue Trude achieved the greatness of fellow past treasure-hunt setters, 'Robbie' Robinson and Bert Marquiss, if the mutterings and groans in the Bath Cricket Club bar were anything to go by! An anguished evening was spent by 40 or so members and friends, wandering the byways, parks and even the canal! It only takes one person to get each clue right and a maximum score is possible. Of course, getting them all right is another story. The Sidcup Renegades or the Lambern/Holvey combo nearly got the lot but were adjudged winners on count back, or best back 9, having floated round in a champagne haze fresh from winning a prize in the 'Bath in Bloom' competition for Terry's front garden. (Although I bet Sheila does most of the work!) There were a number of other creditable scores, and despite the mumblings and 'if only's', it was a fine, warm and challenging evening.
We welcome 3 new Life Members, Tim Maynard (1950) who met Alan Blake at a golf match; Keith Brown (1948) who found us thro' fellow Sulian Brian Hamilton; and Nick 'Biggles' Bowers (1966), my own personal flying instructor.
Enclosed, as usual, you will find news of School from the Headmaster. I am very grateful for his input at a particularly frenetic time of the school year. The Annual School Carol Service will be held at Bath Abbey on Tuesday 10th December at 7.30. Sulians' are very welcome and generally form a cluster mid-aisle.
President's Night, which was to be 20th September, is postponed as there were an awful lot of absentees amongst the locals. Hopefully it take place after Christmas, when we can thank Len for his 2 years.
The Annual Dinner is on Friday 18th October at the Menzies Waterside Hotel, Widcombe Bath, as usual. 7.30 for 8.00. Black Tie or dark lounge suit. If you are a regular there is a ticket with this newsletter. Please send me a cheque for £27.50 (Old Sulians' Association) or return the ticket. If it's not there, ( or you get this by e-mail!) please just send me a cheque and I'll send you a ticket. Once again, Tony Bowrey is off to Minorca to act as caddy and personal medicine man for Mick Moore, so I will handle the post and I need to let the Hotel know numbers, so please be prompt! My address and phone number are below under Hon. Correspondent, for cheques or queries. The guest speaker this year is Sulian Terry Lee, one of the redoubtable '49ers, and amongst other things a Freeman of the City of London, for his work on St Paul's Cathedral.
Ladies Night is 22nd November at the Bath Golf Club. 7.30 for 8.00. Tickets are £32 a pair and this time, please phone Tony Bowrey (01225 463896) or catch him at the Dinner, to book your places. It is rumoured that the 'Grandads' Wood' will be reappearing again after numerous attempted retirements, so voices will be needed for 'Big Bad Tone' and 'Out at the George/Fleur/hacienda-o'.
AGM will probably be February 21st or 28th. Full details in the next bulletin.
The annual 'Old Players' Lunch' this year is on the 19th October. Why not stop over if you're coming to the dinner and see Martock take the bracing Lansdown breeze in the Somerset Cup! Tony Slee can fill you in on the detail. (01225 317256). Too early in the season for results but, in difficult times, the Su's are still alive and scrumming! And finally
A big thank you to all those who supplied e-mail addresses following my plea last time. Hopefully you will all have received this electronically. There are now 28 which include Don Duck, who has emigrated to New Zealand to start a new Branch! This represents a worthwhile saving in postage and printing to the coffers. New additions always welcome. And you can check the web-site for a nostalgia fix.
