NEWSLETTER September 2001

NEWS
The events of the year have gone well so far. Good turnouts for the Golf, with a victory over NHSOB, albeit that our 'away' match was played at home, and trophies for Maurice Bailey (1949), (Old Tosser's Tankard), John Larcombe (morning medal) and Andy Owen (afternoon stableford) on the Association Day. As well as all the usual suspects there was a set of Comers, Tony, Philip and Stewart, (61,89,87) and the offspring of Steve Ford and John Larcombe. Dennis Humphries, a youthful 80+ was the 'Father' of the field. The President attended in the afternoon and the evening dinner was a splendid occasion.

The River picnic had excellent weather and a motley crew assembled under Captain Hardick to journey to Bathampton. The heron was seen and, for the first time, a kingfisher. Pete Combes (1949) came up from 'down under', and acted as navigator up the front with the helmsman, (is that correct for 'driver'?) And Augusts Presidential Perambulatory Quiz again attracted masochists of all ages to wander around Bath looking for things they never knew, in places they'd never been! I believe Pete Powell took the honours, although the real heroine is Sue Trude for plotting the route and clues for the clueless!

Sadly, Ken Green (1932) passed away in July. He was unable to make the golf in June for the first time for many years, and will be sadly missed.

Another of that dwindling band of Sulians' in at the laying of the foundation stone, Fred Wells (1935) dropped me a line to say he has returned to Weston Super Mare after a number of years in Spain. Coincidently , I recently came across a letter from Fred from the early seventies with his Life Sub cheque, saying 'I might be gone some time'! Roy Harper (1955) has given up the Furnishing Business and retired to 'Moorings' in Newport, and Ross Watts (194?) has found us again in the process of looking for his 'Best Man' from 50 years ago, Ron Harrison. Now we couldn't find him locally, but if anyone knows different, let me know and I'll pass the details on. Steve Swift (1967) has sent in some rugby photos of possibly the last Su's v School match in 1969? They have been posted on the website for the cyber-nuts amongst you. A few youthful faces there, in their un-retouched glory.

Enclosed, as usual, you will find an update from the Headmaster of life on Beechen Cliff. As to his scurrilous comment, I was merely 'taking the waters'!

ANNUAL DINNER

Tony Bowrey may be away for a few days so I have agreed to take the mail. We have to pay the Hotel a week in advance. If we don't have your money in the bank the Treasurer gets squeamish in case they send the Bailiff's in! We are talking over £1000 and we don't keep that cash in the current account for obvious reasons. So please do your bit. Money or requests to the Hansford Square address in the box below. Let me know if you require a veggie option.

Ladies Night
Friday 23rd November at Bath Golf Club, Sham Castle. 7.30 for 8. For this you need to phone 'Big Tone', Tony Bowrey on 01225 463896. We don't need the money up front but we do need to know you're coming. Tickets held again at £30 a pair (£15 single) with entertainment from Just in Time II Big Band. Always a popular night in pleasant surroundings. You are welcome to bring guests, just talk numbers to Tone.

Final Thoughts
I had promised to include notes on our President, Len Dyer, but due to a combination of circumstances, have yet to pin him down or find a 'suitable' photo. Next time, I promise. January will be the next newsletter with details of the AGM. If you have any news or requests, do drop me a line and don't forget that the Rugby Club still play at Lansdown on Saturdays.

And finally, your thoughts please for Sulians Charlie Penwill, Don Sly and Alan Taylor in their adopted homeland of America. The events of the 11th still seem so unreal. The world may never be the same.

Once again the envelopes, labels and web-site are sponsored by Systemagic. The IT Company for Bath.
