NEWSLETTER - September 1999

News

Lots to report this time, although I'll try not to steal the Secretary's end of year report.

Golf - We won away at Newport for the first time! An heroic achievement, and a few weeks later 2 dozen contested the Association Golf Day. Robert Hill won the morning Medal, and the afternoon Stableford, but as the rules only allow one cup the Rose Bowl went to Paul Ware. A new trophy - 'The Old Tosser's Tankard' - went to Mick Moore. Quite what qualifies you for eligibility, I don't know!
Then in July another dozen walked the greens at Victoria Park for the Approach Golf Contest. Peter Beach awarded himself the trophy with his own handicap, with Mike Wood second and Alex Wood third.

The '49ers met on the 16th July and, to coin a phrase, a wonderful time was had by all. Pete Powell and Alan Blake, by means fair and foul, managed to find 27 to attend on the day. Alan Blake's full report appears overleaf as it may inspire others to a similar feat!

The now annual Boat Trip up the River was another triumph for Capt. Terry Hardick, on a warm summers evening in August, with over 50 on board.

Membership - The effect of the flyer with the last newsletter was dramatic, with the first cheque delighting the Treasurer within 2 days! With the '49ers influx we have gained 4 yearly and 29 Life Members to bring membership to 248, the highest for some years. Since publishing our e-mail address 'sulians@OldSulians.org.uk' in the last tome I have had several contacts. John Leyshon in Saskatchewan (think of the back of beyond and it's a bit further!), Geoff Yates in Yachtsmans Paradise in Australia and Don Sly in America are all on the Net! If there are more of you out there let me know your address and I'll put a list out. (roger.wood@OldSulians.org.uk) In time we are hoping that Systemagic, who sponsor our envelopes and labels will create a Sulian Web-site with suitable memory provoking content. In the meantime if nostalgia strikes, the Bath Chronicle have www.thisisbath.com and the School are working on theirs as I write which should be www.beechen-cliff.bath.sch.uk in due course. E-mails to 'headmaster@' the above. Technology is wonderful but as I type this on my trusty 486 my new computer lies in silent splendour. I think a new wick is needed!

Subs - Last Reminder! If you are not a Life Member, Honorary Member or have not paid a sub this year this could be your last newsletter. We had a good response after the last note but there are still a number who have not replied. If in doubt drop a note to me or the Treasurer. Those unpaid at the years end will be deleted. (metaphorically speaking!)

And talking of the Rugby Club, some news on that front. President for '99 is Ian Holmes who did so much to revitalise the Club back in the '70s. Ist XV Captain is Nick Skardon, who is ex-Beechen Cliff. Last year was a bit of a disaster league -wise but we wish them well this season in Somerset Div.1. The annual Old Players Smoker is on Saturday 2nd October, with a match against Nailsea and Backwell. Contact Tony Slee 01225 317256 for details. And if you would like to help with sponsorship he would love to hear from you. Visitors are always welcome at Lansdown on a Saturday afternoon.

And finally, as previously noted next year will be our 75th Anniversary. Any memoirs are still welcome. I am collecting them with a view to display or publication.

And finally, finally may I be the first to wish you a Happy Christmas on behalf of the President and Committee, and a successful New Year.
