  4. Very sad news about a man whom I will always remember as easily moved to laughter. I was a year below him and followed the same route from St. Luke’s School on Odd Down to CBBS, so I also remember his dear mother who ran the Odd Down Post Office on Noad’s Corner during the war. He was ‘Hector’ to us all and a great guy. My condolences to his family.

  5. Tony was my mentor when I started teaching at Beechen Cliff Lower School in 1981. He was always very kind when offering help or advice, so of course, I made progress! Later he would say that I had bloomed like a rose from a bud – he was such a charmer! When I met him by chance last year whilst he was walking his dog across Weston Fields, he was just the same – kindly, interested and charming. I said that to continue the rose idea I must now be overblown and thorny. Of course, he wouldn’t have it. To him, everyone had beauty and potential, whatever their age or ability. That was why we all loved him.

  6. I was a couple of years below ‘Hector’ at CBBS and really got to know him well playing rugby with him for the Old Suls. He was one of the most charming men I have met in my life and his charm was totally sincere. He was a pure gentleman and marvellous fun to be with.

I particularly remember an Easter rugby tour to Devon, based at Totnes, when he contrived to have the late John Blackman and me booked into the hotel’s honeymoon suite and kept talking about it for months.

  7. Tony Sweet was quite simply the most liked and respected teacher amongst all pupils during my time at Beechen Cliff (1990-97, even though he has long since retired from full time teaching. That tells you everything you need to know about the popularity of the man.
