Hon Secretary’s Report 2007
Despite support in the past from Roy Ludlow and now Andrew Davies, we have had few new members from Beechen Cliff leavers but we have had a regular number of new members from the ‘Old School’.
Maybe this can be compared with church going? Parents encourage their children to go to Sunday- School and Church. Later, young men leave home and move away. Then as they grow older they look to find old friends. This may be what will happen with the Beechen Cliff leavers.
2007 has been a year with increasing membership. The Executive Committee meets regularly to ensure that events will be organised. The work done by members is greatly appreciated especially Roger Wood in his duties as Hon Correspondent and Social Secretary, the latter now ably assisted by Len Dyer.
We would remind members that if they would like to assist the Association by attending the AGM or organising additional events they are welcome to come forward.
This year we are sorry to have lost John Blackman, Tony Bowrey and Robin Longman. Our condolences to their families and friends.
Once again we are very grateful to the Old Sulians Rugby Club for the continued use of their clubhouse at Lansdown for our meetings.
Peter Powell. Hon. Secretary.
Hon Treasurers Report 2007
I hope that 2007 will show a near balance between income and expenditure for the Association.
The books will shortly be with our Auditor John Foster, to whom we are again very grateful. All of our events made a profit and we continue to be supported by sponsorship from Patchway Autoparts for the Dinner, and Systemagic for our website and stationery. However expenses show an increase due to the increased cost of postage and our donations. This year we again added £15 book tokens and medals to our School Awards, and annually we sponsor a match at the Su’s. This year 2 seasons fell into one year!
We had a net increase of 9 members, most paying a life membership. Our tie stock has diminished and we will be looking at the economics of replacement stock.
As usual, the full accounts and balance sheets will be available at the AGM, and I will give an update in the next newsletter
Rich Wood. Honorary Treasurer.

VERY IMPORTANT
Ladies Night
Gentlemen your support is needed! It’s just a few days away on Saturday 19th January at Bath Golf Club, Sham Castle. I only have around 30 names but at the Annual Dinner I was given a couple of chits with no name! Even if you have told me you are coming please contact me by Sunday 13th to confirm. There are plenty of places available to bring friends or Mother-in-law. It’s 7.30 for 8, £22.50 a head, 4 course dinner and the Just-in-time II Big Band. Contact Roger Wood—Phone:01225 832207 e-mail: ladiesnight@oldsulians.org.uk
Annual Dinner
A wonderful night! I won’t bore you with the pre-dinner traumas. Suffice that with the considerable efforts of a few we became many! 62 booked in with only Rodney Cross being struck down on the day. Mike Hucker confessed his (almost sole) responsibility for the loss of the Empire, Mark and his staff at the Bath Cricket Club provided an excellent meal and a well stocked bar. The only complaint I received was that the evening was not long enough! We had a surge of memberships that are listed later. Thank you all for attending, it does make it worthwhile.
Annual General Meeting
You will see above the call from the Hon.Sec with the Agenda. As a note of explanation it has become customary for the President to serve 2 years. We look to regularise the situation. As to the tie – well, as a result of the Dinner we have 4 left and need to consider replacements. As we include all flavours of The School it has been suggested that we consider the inclusion of the Griffin in the new batch. Rich has found a new supplier at reasonable cost, although about double the current stock. Come along and let us know what you think, or even to order a new tie?
Committee Matters
Following the death of Tony Bowrey we have started talks with the School to provide a ‘Prize’ in his name, probably for Chemistry or Science. And one of the Golf Trophies is to be renamed in his memory. I am also delighted to tell you that Heather Bowrey and Sue Whipp have both accepted Honorary Memberships.
Golf
And talking of golf, the NHSOB match is on May 29th at Sham Castle. Lunch for players and caddies is at 12 noon. Contact Mick Moore if he doesn’t ring you. The Annual Sulian Golf Day is Friday June 20th. Mike Wood is your contact 01225 335250 or mike@systemagic.co.uk.
Old Sulians RFC
The Su’s are finding it tough in the Somerset Premier but holding their own about mid-table with the rugby better than the results might seem to show, I am reliably informed. Up to date details can be found on their website at
www.oldsulians.com and you are always assured of a welcome at Lansdown of a Saturday.
And again, a stop press! A stunning win on 5th Jan. away against Winscombe , the league leaders, 15—0.
Comings and Comings!
We are delighted to welcome Keith Trivett (‘54), Mike Harris(‘55), Nick Stoate(’60), Peter Green(’59), B Waller, Derek Pratt(’56), Eric Sims(’69), Rich Norris(’62), Roger Gardner(’54) and Ben Hartley(’62). (And, stop press, Ian Staines(‘57)
The School
Several of us attended the annual Piano Concert which grows in stature each year whilst others went to the Presentation Evening in the Assembly Rooms and the Carol Service in the Abbey. The School also received an OFSTED Inspection just before Christmas and an excellent report for both School and Governors was received. Details can be found on the School website linked to the Bath Chronicle. Why not visit http://support.beechencliff.org.uk/index.html
And Finally….
As this is being written just 2 days into the new term I have been unable to extract a newsletter from the Headmaster but hopefully we will get an update in May when you lucky people should also get the Sulian Social Diary for 2008. We look forward to your support. And if you have any news, ‘Where are they now’ requests or even ‘What I’m up to now’ (careful!), I am always grateful for materiel for the newsletters and your public awaits.
